NASS Urged to Expedite Federal Fire Service Act Enactment

Olumod Samuel Adeyemi, the current Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, has called on the National Assembly to fast-track the repeal and enactment of the Federal Fire Service and Rescue Act. This appeal was made during a program commemorating International Firefighters Day on Monday in Abuja.

The existing legal framework, established under the Nigeria Fire Service Act of 1963, is deemed outdated and requires replacement to enhance the operational capabilities of the Federal Fire Service. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the repeal of the 1963 Act in June 2022, paving the way for the enactment of the new Federal Fire Rescue Service Establishment Act 2022.

However, despite this approval, the new bill has faced delays in the National Assembly. Adeyemi emphasized that the establishment of fire stations in constituencies will significantly increase coverage and reduce response times, ultimately saving lives and protecting property valued at approximately N300 billion.
