NASU Demands Equal Allowance with ASUU Amid Negotiations

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NASU) is demanding allowance parity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). During the 114th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, NASU's General Secretary, Comrade Peter Adeyemi, emphasized that workers deserve fair treatment and equitable compensation in line with economic realities.

NASU seeks equal allowances for its members, who perform essential functions within universities, arguing that they should not be treated differently from ASUU members. The union's demand for parity follows the federal government's approval of a 40% allowance increase for ASUU members.

NASU previously rejected a 30% increase offer from the government, stating it fell short of addressing the cost of living affecting workers. Adeyemi expressed concern over delays in implementing agreements and warned that such delays could trigger industrial disputes across tertiary institutions.

He urged the government to negotiate in good faith and expressed optimism that ongoing negotiations would produce positive outcomes for non-academic staff welfare across the country.
