Nigerian National Power Grid Collapses Again, Causes Major Outage

The Nigerian national power grid suffered its second collapse in four days, with power generation dropping from a peak of 4,762 megawatts to just 39 megawatts. The collapse occurred on a Tuesday, following a similar incident in January 2026.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed that the collapse was due to a simultaneous trip of several 330kV transmission lines at 12:40 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2026. This incident led to a total collapse of the interconnect network, causing a system-wide disturbance and resulting in a complete outage across the grid.

The grid had previously experienced collapses in December 2025 and earlier in January 2026. The distribution companies were unable to supply electricity during the outage, leaving many without power.

The NISO issued a statement informing the public about the situation.
