Nigerian Students Mobilize for Protests Against Controversial Tax Laws

Nigerian students are mobilizing for nationwide protests against the implementation of new tax laws effective January 1, 2026. The controversial tax reform has led to disputes and discrepancies, with various stakeholders, including the Nigerian Bar Association and Nigeria Labour Congress, calling for clarification and suspension of the law.

President Olushola Oladoja's decision to proceed with the tax reform has been criticized as premature and undemocratic. Human rights lawyer Femi Falana warns of legal hurdles and alleged insertions in the law, threatening legal action.

The situation remains tense as protests are planned in Abuja on January 14.
