Alabi Advocates Universal Suffrage in NBA Elections

Boma Alabi, a former president of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, condemned the practice of regional endorsements for candidates in the upcoming Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential elections. In an interview, she described such endorsements as outdated and divisive, arguing that they do not reflect democratic aspirations within the legal profession.

Alabi, who previously served as the chairman of the NBA Section on Legal Practice, called for open competition and universal suffrage to ensure greater transparency in the electoral process. She warned that regional endorsements could undermine the democratic foundation of the NBA and limit individual choice among lawyers.

Alabi expressed confidence in the integrity of electronic voting systems, emphasizing the need for transparency and the appointment of credible technology firms to manage the electoral process. She also supported the emergence of the NBA's first female president, highlighting the significance of gender diversity in leadership roles within the legal profession.
