NBA Postpones Port Harcourt Election Amid Protests

The Port Harcourt branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has postponed its election indefinitely, which was originally scheduled for Friday, July 24, 2026. This decision was made in response to protests from aggrieved lawyers who alleged manipulation of the electoral process.

Demonstrators were seen at the NBA House in Port Harcourt, prompting a heavy security presence to maintain peace during the protests. Despite attempts by some officials to calm the situation, the election was postponed to avoid any potential breach of the peace.

As of the time of reporting, the NBA committee had not announced a new date for the election. Chilezie Orlu-orlu, a candidate for the position of Social Secretary, claimed that the Electoral Committee failed to comply with the branch's bye-law by not publishing the voter register ahead of the election, stating that a final voters list was published late the previous night.
