NBA Criticizes Stringent Police Bail Conditions in Nigeria

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, expressed concerns regarding the stringent police bail conditions imposed across the country during a meeting with Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu in Abuja on Tuesday. Osigwe noted that bail has become punitive, denying suspects the opportunity to regain their freedom.

He argued that the current practices create a black market for suretyship, where individuals with no relationship to suspects offer to stand as sureties for a fee, imposing a financial burden on detainees and their families. Osigwe called for compliance with legal provisions that require judicial officers to inspect detention facilities and emphasized that the police should not impose restrictive conditions on bail.

He urged the police leadership to ensure cooperation with judicial officers to uphold the rights of detainees. Disu acknowledged the concerns and assured that the matter would be addressed, emphasizing the need for a symbiotic relationship between the police and the judiciary to ensure a smooth operation of the criminal justice system.
