NBC Calls for Collaboration on Africa's Borderland Issues

The National Boundary Commission (NBC) advocated for stronger collaboration among governments, academia, border communities, and development partners to address challenges in Africa's borderlands at the Association of Borderlands Research Network (ABORNE) 2026 International Conference held in Lagos from August 24–28, 2026. The conference theme is “The Connected Borderlands, Socio-Cultural Integration, and the Centrality of Policy, Research, and Security.” Surveyor Adamu A.

Adaji, Director-General of NBC, described borderlands as strategic zones requiring effective governance through evidence-based policies. The NBC participated in a Plenary Roundtable Discussion on border demarcation and maritime governance, featuring key figures such as Mr. Nurudeen M.

Abba, Dr. Farouk Tarfa, and Commodore M. S.

Shettima. The discussions focused on boundary delimitation challenges and security threats, including terrorism and smuggling.

Adaji emphasized the need for collaboration to balance sovereignty with cooperation and security with mobility. The conference is co-hosted by Lagos State University and the Nigeria Immigration Service, with several partnering agencies involved.
