NCAA Orders United Nigeria Airlines to Cut Routes, Refunds

On September 9, 2023, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) held a consultative meeting with United Nigeria Airlines in Abuja, addressing significant operational disruptions that led to passenger complaints. The NCAA mandated the airline to cut back on its active routes, enhance flight operations, and ensure timely refunds to passengers.

NCAA Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, emphasized that the regulatory framework aims to promote sustainable and lawful operations rather than drive airlines out of business. He warned United Nigeria against operating beyond its fleet capacity and opening new destinations without adequate resources.

Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, criticized the airline for failing to comply with operational and consumer protection regulations, particularly regarding communication with passengers during disruptions. He described the recent operational failures as "gross" and stated that such non-compliance would no longer be tolerated by the NCAA.
