NCC Reports 185 Million Active Phone Lines in Nigeria

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has indicated that Nigeria now has 185 million active phone lines, a significant increase from less than half a million two decades ago. This growth reflects a paradigm shift in the telecommunications sector, where mobile phones have become essential for daily life and business.

The NCC is focused on improving service quality and has implemented various policies to enhance consumer experience. Recently, the NCC approved a 50% tariff hike for telecom operators, aiming to ensure they commit to expanding infrastructure and delivering better services.

The commission has also empowered consumers by requiring mobile network operators to inform them about service disruptions and estimated restoration times. Additionally, the NCC plans to deploy 12,000 new sites by 2026, with 3,000 already in progress, which is expected to significantly improve service quality and reduce call drop rates.
