Nigerian Telecoms Sector Sees Growth with 185M Lines

The Nigerian telecommunications sector has experienced substantial growth, with the number of active phone lines reaching 185 million in a country with an estimated population of 230 million. This transformation has occurred over the past two decades, marking a significant shift in the perception of mobile phones from luxury items to essential business tools.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has played a crucial role in facilitating this growth through various regulatory measures aimed at improving service quality and consumer experience. Recent statistics indicate that Nigeria's data usage averages 45,800 terabytes daily as of March 2026.

The NCC has also empowered consumers by ensuring compensation for poor service from mobile network operators (MNOs). Furthermore, the NCC approved a 50% tariff hike to encourage telecom companies to invest in infrastructure, with a commitment of $1 billion for network upgrades covering 2,866 sites.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commended these steps to protect investments and reduce service disruptions.
