NCC Deploys 8,526 Telecom Sites to Combat Call Masking

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced the deployment of 8,526 telecom sites, marking significant progress from the 5,000 sites reported at its 109th meeting. This initiative aims to address the resurgence of call masking, which threatens the telecommunications sector's integrity.

The NCC Board, during its 110th meeting, expressed concerns over network disruptions caused by fibre cuts and emphasized the need for better protection of critical communications infrastructure. Updates were provided on the Device Management System (DMS), which is now operational and aims to enhance compliance with device regulations and combat mobile device theft.

The Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS) is expected to go live in October 2026, focusing on governance of telecommunications identities. Additionally, the Board reviewed the framework for zero-rating educational platforms, officially launched on September 10, with a go-live date of October 1, 2026, to improve digital inclusion in education.
