NCC Introduces Device Checker to Combat Fake Phones
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) launched the Device Checker Platform to address the issue of fake and cloned phones. Engr. Maigana Gidado, the Zonal Controller of the NCC Zonal Office, announced this initiative during a media briefing in Kano.
The platform aims to strengthen enforcement of technical standards, protect consumers from non-compliant devices, and maintain the integrity of telecommunications networks. The NCC has streamlined its licensing process, allowing many device dealers in Kano State to obtain licenses.
Additionally, the commission has engaged with importers and industry stakeholders across Nigeria to raise awareness of Type Approval requirements. A user-friendly application has been developed for authorized stakeholders to scan International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers and upload information to the platform.
Consumers can check device status before purchase via the NCC website. The NCC clarified that the platform is not a surveillance tool and does not access personal data.
It urged consumers to verify devices and comply with Type Approval requirements.
