NCC Enhances Device Regulation to Combat Counterfeits

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has intensified efforts to combat the circulation of counterfeit, cloned, and unauthorized communication devices in Nigeria. The commission is urging manufacturers, importers, distributors, and dealers to comply with its equipment Type Approval requirements.
At a media briefing at the NCC Zonal Office in Lagos, Zonal Controller Mr Tunji Jimoh announced that the Device Checker Platform aims to strengthen regulatory oversight of SIM-enabled devices, protect consumers from non-compliant products, and maintain the integrity of telecommunications networks. The NCC has made progress in implementing the platform, including streamlining licensing processes for device dealers in Kano State.
The commission has also engaged with industry stakeholders to enhance understanding of Type Approval requirements. A user-friendly application has been developed for stakeholders to scan device International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, facilitating compliance.
Consumers can verify a device's Type Approval status through the Check Your Device portal. Jimoh emphasized that the platform does not access personal data or monitor users.
