NCC Enforces IMEI Verification for Device Compliance

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a warning to manufacturers, importers, and dealers of SIM-enabled devices regarding compliance with mandatory type approval and device verification requirements. In a notice dated October 19, 2026, the NCC stated that non-compliant devices may face restrictions from accessing mobile networks.
The commission is enhancing the enforcement of existing regulations through automated verification to monitor devices that are imported, distributed, and sold in Nigeria. This requirement applies to original equipment manufacturers, original device manufacturers, importers, distributors, dealers, and retailers under the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, Type Approval Regulations 2024, and Type Approval Business Rules 2024.
All device models intended for importation, assembly, distribution, or sale must obtain the necessary type approval. Suppliers are required to submit the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) information of individual devices for verification before sale and distribution.
The NCC has urged distributors, dealers, and retailers to ensure compliance with existing stock and to address any outstanding issues with their suppliers.
