NCC Ensures Device Compliance Framework Protects Privacy

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) stated that its enhanced device compliance framework cannot access users' private data, including messages, photographs, contacts, and financial information. Engr. Edoyemi Ogoh, the Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity at the NCC, provided this assurance during a news conference in Abuja.
The framework utilizes device identification information, such as International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, to verify compliance with technical standards and identify devices lacking regulatory approval. It is designed for regulatory compliance rather than surveillance.
The NCC aims to identify non-compliant, cloned, and counterfeit devices, thereby strengthening network performance and improving consumer confidence. The Commission has registered approximately 231 million telecommunications devices in Nigeria and is working with the Nigeria Customs Service and other stakeholders to authenticate devices before they enter the market.
Consumers are advised to confirm the approval status of devices before purchase, particularly those using SIM cards.
