NCDC Warns Cholera Outbreak Still Active in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a warning regarding the ongoing cholera outbreak in Nigeria, stating that transmission remains active across the country. During a press briefing in Abuja, NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris reported over 65,000 suspected cholera cases across 35 states and approximately 195 Local Government Areas in 2023.

Although there has been a significant decline in weekly cases compared to earlier peaks, the NCDC stresses the need for sustained efforts to prevent further infections and deaths. Dr. Idris noted that cholera transmission typically peaks between late August and October, exacerbated by the rainy season and potential flooding.

He highlighted unsafe water, open defecation, and inadequate sanitation as ongoing risks. The NCDC also reported over 10,000 confirmed diphtheria cases this year, with low vaccination coverage posing a major concern.

The agency continues to coordinate public health responses with state governments and partners.
