NCoS and Army Enhance Collaboration for Prison Security

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and the Nigerian Army Intelligence Corps (NAIC) have committed to strengthening their collaboration to improve intelligence sharing and enhance security at custodial facilities. This agreement was established during a courtesy visit by Major General R.E.

Hedima, Chief of Military Intelligence, to Sylvester Nwakuche, the Controller-General of Corrections, at the NCoS National Headquarters in Abuja. Nwakuche emphasized the need for inter-agency cooperation due to the increasing complexity of security challenges, noting that the NCoS currently manages approximately 81,000 inmates, with about 65% awaiting trial and over 4,000 on death row.

He acknowledged the sacrifices of correctional personnel and highlighted ongoing investments in inmate reformation programs. Major General Hedima expressed the need for enhanced joint operational capacity and proposed joint training, specialized intelligence officers, and timely intelligence exchanges to address evolving threats.

Nwakuche welcomed these proposals, expressing confidence that deeper collaboration would significantly improve custodial security and contribute to Nigeria's overall security framework.
