NCoS Destroys 1,167 Phones, Sanctions 147 Officers

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) destroyed 1,167 mobile phones and other unauthorized materials as part of efforts to combat contraband smuggling within correctional facilities. This operation, led by Sylvest Nwakuch, involved the confiscation of items over the past eight months, including smartphones, SIM cards, and chargers.

The presence of these contraband items was deemed a serious threat to security and discipline within the facilities. Additionally, NCoS reported the confiscation of ₦2.57 million in cash during operations, which has been paid into government coffers.

A total of 147 personnel were sanctioned for various acts of misconduct, including complicity in contraband trafficking. Nwakuch emphasized that the service would not shield any personnel undermining its mandate and warned the public against attempting to smuggle prohibited items into facilities.

The NCoS is collaborating with external agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, to address these challenges.
