NCoS Sanctions 147 Officers Over Contraband Issues

On May 5, 2023, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) announced the sanctioning of 147 personnel for various acts of misconduct, including involvement in contraband trafficking within custody centers. The agency disclosed that a total of 1,167 mobile phones, including iPhones and Android devices, were destroyed in an exercise supervised by Nwakuch at the NCoS headquarters in Abuja.

This destruction of contraband is part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening discipline and security within Nigeria's correctional system. Nwakuch described the exercise as a strong signal of the agency's resolve to confront security threats and maintain discipline.

Over the past eight months, the NCoS has confiscated contraband items valued at 2,569,000 naira, which have been remitted to the appropriate government treasury. The agency reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline, warning that personnel found culpable would face severe consequences, including dismissal.
