NCoS Sanctions Officers After Inmate's TikTok Live Stream

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has taken disciplinary action following a TikTok live stream by a death row inmate at the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State. In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by Chief Superintendent of Corrections and Service Public Relations Officer Jean Osuji, the incident was described as a serious breach of custodial security and a violation of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the inmate unlawfully possessed a mobile phone, which was recovered during a search operation. The Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, ordered the removal of the Officer-in-Charge and two other principal officers, who are suspended pending further investigations.

The inmate has been transferred to another facility under enhanced security. The NCoS identified security lapses that enabled the breach and is implementing corrective measures.

Investigations are ongoing to determine if any officers, inmates, or external collaborators were involved.
