NCoS: Inmates Prefer Custody Due to Societal Rejection

The National Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), CSC Jane Osuji, addressed the issue of inmates preferring to stay in custody after serving their jail terms during a visit to Blueprint Newspapers in Abuja. Osuji stated that societal rejection plays a significant role in this phenomenon, as many inmates who have acquired skills while incarcerated find it difficult to reintegrate into society.

She noted that individuals who have undergone reformatory programs and earned income while in custody often struggle to find support from the community. Additionally, Osuji warned against illegal communication with inmates, stating that such actions are punishable under the Nigerian Correctional Act 2019, specifically section 29, subsection 123, which outlines penalties of up to three million Naira or three years in prison for those who condone or facilitate such communication.

She urged the public to report any illegal calls from inmates to the appropriate authorities.
