NDLEA Arrests Fugitive Linked to Major Heroin Seizure

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested Festus Ibewuike, also known as Chidibest Ibewuike, who had been a fugitive for over two years after allegedly fleeing to Mozambique. His arrest on September 2, 2026, at the airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, was part of an investigation into a drug trafficking syndicate linked to the seizure of 49.7kg of heroin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos in February 2024.

The NDLEA announced the arrest through its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi. Ibewuike was one of three suspects charged in absentia after the heroin was intercepted concealed in cartons of metal-cutting machines.

The agency froze 107 bank accounts linked to the cartel and forfeited properties. Ibewuike confirmed his identity during preliminary interviews and was linked to a previous drug case involving 40.255kg of methamphetamine.

NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in combating drug trafficking.
