NEDC Approves N100bn Solar Power Project for North-East

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has approved plans to invest approximately N100bn in a 50-megawatt solar power project aimed at improving electricity supply across North-East Nigeria. Mohammed Alkali, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NEDC, announced this during a press briefing in Abuja.

The project will utilize modular solar-powered systems to provide electricity to schools, hospitals, markets, and other essential public infrastructure across the six states in the region. Alkali emphasized that inadequate electricity is a significant barrier to development, with about 61% of residents lacking access to power.

The NEDC board has authorized the immediate commencement of the project, which is part of the commission's third phase of development focusing on expanding economic opportunities. Additionally, the commission plans to promote electric mobility by deploying 10,000 solar-powered electric tricycles and buses, an initiative approved by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at creating jobs and supporting clean transportation.
