Nepal Glacier Collapse Causes Over 1,100 Deaths

A glacier collapse in the Himalayas has resulted in devastating flash floods in Nepal, leading to at least 1,114 confirmed deaths, with nearly 3,900 individuals still unaccounted for. Authorities are concerned that many victims may be buried under debris in affected towns and valleys near the Chinese border.

Rescue operations involve teams from Nepal, India, China, and the United States, focusing on hydroelectric plant tunnels where survivors might be trapped. So far, 279 people have been rescued, while another 639 remain missing.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has indicated that the chances of finding additional survivors are diminishing as efforts shift towards rehabilitation and reconstruction. The UN Development Programme reported that the disaster generated approximately 2.2 million tons of debris, severely impacting infrastructure.

The United Nations has warned of significant public health risks due to overcrowded shelters and contaminated water, especially during the monsoon season. Currently, nearly 3,500 displaced individuals are residing in 27 sites in the worst-hit districts of Nuwakot and Rasuwa.
