Nepal Flash Flood Leaves Over 500 Dead, Thousands Missing

On Wednesday, a catastrophic flash flood struck towns along the Himalayan border, resulting in over 500 deaths and leaving more than 1,500 individuals missing across Nepal and China. The disaster was triggered by the collapse of bedrock beneath a high-altitude glacier, which caused a magnitude 5.2 seismic event.

This collapse unleashed a massive wave of mud, rock, and water, described by survivors as a “tsunami,” obliterating concrete structures, bridges, and highways in seconds. Areas such as Gyirong Port and nearby villages were buried under thick sludge, trapping locals, workers, and international trekkers.

Emergency teams, including military helicopters, are working tirelessly to rescue survivors and evacuate thousands of stranded individuals. Helicopters have airlifted over 3,000 survivors to Kathmandu and medical centers.

Authorities are also issuing alerts for potential secondary flooding due to debris dams formed in the mountains. The situation remains dire as rescuers continue to search for the missing, highlighting the vulnerability of human settlements in mountainous regions.
