Nepotism: Criticise Tinubu, not Yoruba, UN envoy tells Babachir Lawal

Olufemi Aduwo, the permanent representative of the Centre for Convention on Democratic Integrity at the United Nations, criticized Babachir Lawal for linking President Bola Tinubu's alleged ethnic bias in appointments to the Yoruba ethnic group. Aduwo called Lawal's comments deeply unjust and dangerously divisive, stating that grievances with Tinubu should not be extended to the entire ethnic group.

He argued that portraying the Yoruba as ungrateful or exclusionary is inaccurate, citing historical examples. Aduwo emphasized the need for competence and inclusivity in public appointments, urging Lawal to focus his criticism on Tinubu's government rather than generalizing about the Yoruba.

He warned against conflating ethnic identity with political loyalty, stating that Nigeria needs healing and competent leadership to govern justly and unite the country.
