Nigerian Power Sector Struggles as 10 Plants Supply 81% of Electricity in September 2025

In September 2025, Nigeria's electricity supply remained heavily concentrated among just 10 out of 26 grid-connected power plants, accounting for 81% of total energy production. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that the power sector is facing challenges with uneven performance, as several plants contribute little to nothing despite the total installed capacity of 13,625 megawatts.

The top-performing plants include Zungeru, Egbin, Kainji, Jebba, Delta, Shiroro, Ihovbor, Okpai, Geregu, and Afam II, while lower-tier plants like Olorunsogo II and Sapele Steam have significantly lower capacity utilization rates.
