NESREA and ACMTI Launch Carbon Capture Initiative in Port Harcourt

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the Africa Carbon Management Technology Innovation Centre (ACMTI) launched a carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) initiative in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. During the keynote address, Prof.

Innoc Barikor, the Director General of NESREA, highlighted the project's importance as a milestone in Nigeria's journey toward environmental sustainability and climate resilience. The CCUS initiative is designed to provide economically viable pathways for industrial decarbonization, particularly in sectors such as beverage, cement manufacturing, chemical production, fuel enhancement, oil recovery, and agriculture.

Prof. Owunari Georgewill, Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, commended NESREA for its initiative, noting its alignment with Nigeria's 2035 energy transition targets.

Dr. Richard Victor Osu from ACMTI expressed a vision for Nigeria to become a regional leader in carbon management technology, while Juho Lipponen from the CEM CCUS Initiative emphasized the potential of Port Harcourt as a CCUS hub in Nigeria.
