NESREA Launches Carbon Capture Platform in Port Harcourt

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) launched a carbon capture and utilization/storage (CCUS) initiative in Port Harcourt, River State, as part of efforts to accelerate Nigeria's transition to a low-carbon economy. The hybrid event featured local and international stakeholders, including experts from the United States, France, Brazil, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

NESREA's Director, Innoc Barikor, emphasized the initiative's significance in achieving environmental sustainability and climate resilience, aligning with Nigeria's broader development agenda and global climate commitments. The CCUS platform aims to provide viable economic pathways to reduce emissions across critical sectors by capturing and repurposing carbon for use in beverage products, cement manufacturing, chemical production, and enhanced oil recovery.

The initiative promotes a circular economy and addresses environmental challenges while creating economic opportunities. The University of Port Harcourt's Vice Chancellor, Owunari George-Wil, praised the initiative, highlighting its potential to position Nigeria as a regional hub for carbon management technology.
