New Zealand Excludes Nigeria From Working Holiday Scheme, Opens Doors to Just 2 African Nations

New Zealand's 2026 working holiday visa programme covers 45 countries but excludes all African nations, including Nigeria, while only Mauritius and Seychelles…
Starting in 2026, New Zealand Immigration unveiled 45 nations whose citizens qualify for Working Holiday visas, though Nigeria and other African states are excluded from eligibility. Young people from designated territories with bilateral agreements to Wellington may reside, work, and study there for up to 12 months.
The typical age range spans 18–30 years, with some countries allowing applications from those up to 35. A separate framework covers roughly 60 countries participating in New Zealand's visa-waiver initiative through the Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA).
Nationals from these qualifying nations can enter without filing a conventional visa application. Only Mauritius and Seychelles from Africa gain access to this programme.
Major African economic powers—Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt—fall outside this arrangement, obligating their citizens to pursue standard visa channels. New Zealand's immigration design rests upon longstanding diplomatic relationships and reciprocal bilateral frameworks, avoiding continent-wide or region-based categorization.
Tailored eligibility conditions accompany agreements negotiated with each partner nation individually. Foreign nationals based in New Zealand have pathways to enlist in military service.
The Defence Force accepts applications from permanent residents and holders of certain visas, provided applicants meet essential criteria including age requirements and freedom from criminal records. Security-cleared defence positions generally call for citizenship or permanent residency in New Zealand, coupled with five years of continuous residence or residency from age 18 onward—taking whichever duration is shorter.
