Nigerians Shift to African Destinations Amid Visa Issues

Stringent visa protocols imposed by the United States and several European and Asian countries, along with xenophobia in South Africa, have prompted Nigerians to seek alternative holiday destinations in Africa during the summer holidays in 2026. Countries such as Kenya, Rwanda, Egypt, Morocco, Mauritius, and Ghana have become popular due to their more accessible visa policies.

Kenya is entirely visa-free for Nigerian passport holders, allowing entry for up to 60 days upon arrival. Following a policy shift in July 2025, Kenya Airways reported a significant increase in passenger numbers from Nigeria, with over 10,000 additional travelers, leading to expanded flight capacities from Lagos and plans to start operations in Abuja.

Ghana welcomed over 176,000 Nigerian visitors in 2025, while Rwanda offers a visa-free entry for short visits. Egypt allows Nigerians to obtain a visa on arrival for $30 or through an e-visa platform.
