NFIU Tracks 41.7M Transactions to Combat Crime

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has intensified its efforts to disrupt terrorism financing, money laundering, and organized criminal networks by tracking over 41.7 million transactions. Aishatu Bantam, the Head of Strategic Communications at the NFIU, disclosed this information during a joint security news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
The NFIU is tracing the financial footprints of various criminal groups, including terrorists and cybercriminals, to dismantle their networks. The strategy aims to complement conventional security operations by identifying key players involved in these activities.
Bantam reported that the NFIU had submitted 42,082 Suspicious Transaction Reports and 10,513 Suspicious Activity Reports in 2025, with tax crimes and fraud constituting 51% of the intelligence reports. The NFIU's analysis has revealed new methods of terrorism financing, necessitating stronger monitoring of financial activities.
The unit has also received international recognition for its collaboration with the EFCC, winning the UNODC-World Bank-Egmont Group Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative Award.
