Tax Crimes and Fraud Dominate NFIU Reports in 2025

In 2025, tax crimes and fraud made up more than 51 percent of the financial crime intelligence reports disseminated by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to law enforcement and regulatory authorities. The NFIU's 2025 Annual Report revealed that tax crimes accounted for 30 percent of the top ten designated offences, while fraud represented 21 percent.
Money laundering followed with 15 percent, and illegal trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances accounted for 10 percent. Bribery and corruption, as well as terrorism financing, each constituted 8 percent.
The NFIU disseminated 1,398 proactive intelligence reports and produced 2,033 reactive intelligence reports in 2025. Proactive reports stem from analysis of disclosures from reporting entities and international counterparts, while reactive reports support investigations by providing additional financial information.
The NFIU identified emerging risks in fraud, including Ponzi schemes, fraudulent crowdfunding, cryptocurrency-enabled scams, and hacking-related fraud.
