NFL Revises Replay Challenge Rules for 2026 Season

The NFL has announced a revision to Rule 15 Section 1, effective for the 2026 season, which permits designated assistants to throw the red flag for replay challenges, a practice that has been exclusive to head coaches since the review system's inception in 1999. Under the new rule, either the head coach or a designated assistant can initiate a challenge by throwing the red flag before the next play's snap or the ball is kicked.

Head coaches wishing to allow another coach to initiate a challenge must inform the officiating crew prior to the game. Despite this change, the head coach retains control over the decision to challenge a call, typically consulting with staff in the coaches' booth.

Each NFL team will continue to have two replay challenges per game, with an additional challenge awarded for two successful challenges. Replay reviews can cover various situations, including possession, down calls, first downs, and scoring plays, while certain events like turnovers and player ejections will be automatically reviewed.
