Ecosmart Club Launches Sustainable Fashion Initiative

The Ecosmart Club, led by founder Hannah Omokhay, has unveiled the Oniparo project, a nine-month sustainable fashion initiative designed to address the negative impacts of fast fashion on traditional cloth traders in Western Nigeria. The project aims to reduce textile waste and promote circular economy practices among women, who play a significant role in the cloth redistribution system.

Omokhay highlighted that traditional trade is increasingly threatened by economic changes and climate impacts, which have shifted consumer patterns. The Oniparo project, running from March to October 2026, will also raise public awareness about the environmental consequences of textile waste.

Oluwatoyin Ajao, managing the project, emphasized the importance of recognizing women's contributions to the circular economy. The initiative is supported by the African Climate Alliance and aims to create co-benefits such as zero textile waste and cultural preservation.
