NGO Calls for Full Implementation of Anti-Torture Act

Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF) France, a human rights organization, called on the Nigerian federal government to expedite the implementation of the Anti-Torture Act of 2017 during an event in Abuja commemorating International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The organization highlighted that despite the Act being enacted eight years ago, it has not been fully operational due to the lack of necessary rules and regulations.

This delay hampers effective investigations and prosecutions, leaving victims without justice. Angela Uwandu, the director of ASF France Nigeria, welcomed the recent announcement by the Federal Ministry of Justice regarding the gazetting of regulations, expressing hope that this would lead to full implementation of the legislation.

Uwandu urged the government to ensure proper training for law enforcement personnel and adequate funding for rehabilitation programs. Since 2009, ASF France has provided legal assistance to 1,000 torture victims in Nigeria and continues to advocate for improved access to justice and support services for survivors.
