Nigerians Report Life-Threatening HMO Healthcare Delays

Nigerians have expressed serious concerns regarding their experiences with Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs), describing life-threatening situations due to delays in medical treatment. Complaints surfaced on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where users shared personal stories of inadequate care.

A notable account from Foundational Nupe Lawyer detailed the tragic loss of his son due to a hospital's delay in referring him to another facility while waiting for HMO approval. Other users echoed similar frustrations, reporting that HMO patients often receive inferior treatment compared to those paying directly.

Midnight Counsel recounted being neglected for hours while others were treated first, and Olajẹtẹmi criticized hospitals for their lack of responsiveness upon discovering a patient’s HMO status. A former HMO employee, Sen. BABS, suggested that hospitals are often to blame, claiming that approvals are typically granted on time but are not communicated to patients.

The situation has raised significant concerns about the quality of healthcare services for HMO enrollees.
