NHIA Enhances Cancer Care Support for Nigerian Women

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), led by Director General Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, has called on Nigerian women to prioritize early detection of breast cancer as Nigeria marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Current estimates indicate that Nigeria has 32,278 new breast cancer cases and 16,332 deaths annually, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Nigerian women.
The NHIA aims to strengthen health insurance as a financial buffer against the high costs of cancer treatment, which often exceeds household income. A partnership with pharmaceutical company Roche will reduce the cost of selected oncology medicines, with Roche covering 50% and NHIA 30%, leaving patients to pay only 20%.
This arrangement alleviates 80% of the medicine cost burden. Additionally, the NHIA has introduced support for radiotherapy and cancer-related diagnostics, including mammography and CT scans.
Over 23 million Nigerians are currently enrolled in the national health insurance system, emphasizing the need for effective coverage against serious illnesses.
