NHRC Condemns Lagos Demolitions and Anambra Market Closure, Citing Human Rights Violations

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) expressed grave concerns over the house demolitions in Lagos and the closure of the main market in Anambra. Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, highlighted the significant human rights implications of these actions, particularly the displacement of thousands of residents in Lagos, including those in the Makoko waterfront settlement. The NHRC emphasized that demolitions are often carried out without adequate notice, compensation, or resettlement plans, leaving families homeless and destroying their livelihoods, which violates constitutional guarantees and international human rights standards.

Dr. Ojukwu criticized the disregard for court rulings prohibiting forced evictions, undermining the rule of law and eroding public confidence in the government. The NHRC called for an immediate halt to demolitions, meaningful consultations with affected communities, and adequate resettlement and compensation provisions. The closure of the Onitsha main market due to traders' compliance with a government directive was also highlighted, raising concerns about livelihoods, freedom of movement, and economic losses estimated at 8 billion Naira weekly.
