NHRC Reports 600 Human Rights Violations in Borno

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Borno has recorded over 600 cases of human rights violations, including domestic violence, child abuse, and human trafficking, between January and July 2026. Ms Jummai Mshelia, the State Coordinator of the NHRC, disclosed this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri.

The reported cases encompass various human rights concerns, notably sexual and gender-based violence. Mshelia attributed the rise in reported cases to increased public awareness and trust in the commission.

Domestic violence was highlighted as a prevalent issue, with many victims now willing to report incidents they previously viewed as private matters. The NHRC has also noted a concerning rise in vulnerable children engaging in street begging due to factors such as poverty and domestic violence.

Mshelia emphasized the commission's commitment to justice for victims, stating that all services are free and accessible. However, she mentioned that a lack of operational vehicles poses a challenge to effective service delivery.
