Gombe Deputy Governor Calls for Stronger Human Rights Ties

On a recent occasion, Gombe State Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau urged for stronger collaboration between the Gombe State Government and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to address the increasing cases of human rights violations in the state. This call was made during a courtesy visit from Dr Joseph Kwanshe, the Gombe State Coordinator of the NHRC, along with his management team.

Jatau described the NHRC as an “indispensable” institution, emphasizing its critical role in maintaining peace and preventing conflicts. He expressed particular concern over rising incidents of gender-based violence, the humiliation of widows by their late husbands' families, and the failure of some men to fulfill family responsibilities.

Jatau noted that nearly all complaints he receives regarding family issues come from women. He linked social problems, such as drug abuse, to unresolved grievances, which he believes contribute to human rights violations.

He stressed the importance of the NHRC in addressing these issues to prevent potential outbreaks of law and order.
