NHRC Urges Political Actors to Uphold Human Rights Ahead of 2027 Elections

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a warning to political actors to comply with human rights regulations as political campaigns ramp up for the 2027 general elections. This statement was made by the NHRC Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, during the presentation of the NHRC’s August 2026 Human Rights Situation Dashboard in Abuja.

Ojukwu stressed the Commission's commitment to ensuring the protection of human rights, particularly the right to political participation, throughout the electoral process. He noted that the NHRC recorded 297,943 complaints nationwide in August, with insecurity being a significant concern, particularly in Benue and Niger states.

Ojukwu called for thorough investigations into recent attacks and urged justice for victims. He commended security agencies for successful rescue operations, including the rescue of 308 Nigerians in Niger and Kwara states on August 5.

Ojukwu also emphasized the need for ongoing support for survivors of violence and expressed concerns regarding the proposed Foreign Aid Bill's impact on civic space.
