Niamey Regains Control After Attempted Coup in Niger

Niamey returned to normal following an attempted coup, with intense fighting occurring overnight from Friday to Saturday. The army, supported by the Russian Africa Corps, regained control after mutineers attempted to storm the presidential compound, resulting in several deaths and arrests.

General Abdourahamane Tiani has been in power since a coup in July 2023 and has shifted Niger's alliances closer to Russia, distancing from Western partners like France. By Sunday, access to the airbase and presidency was restored, and local businesses resumed operations.

A significant security presence remained, with soldiers screening individuals entering the presidency. This incident marks the third such occurrence in 2023, with previous attacks attributed to jihadists.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed that Italian military personnel in Niger are safe and emphasized the importance of Niger's stability for the Sahel region's security. Nigeria expressed deep concern and urged for a return to stability and constitutional order.
