Nigeria's Relations with Niger Post-Coup: A Three-Year Review

On July 26, 2023, General Abdourahaman Tchiani led a coup in Niger, overthrowing democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum, which plunged the country into a political crisis. In response, ECOWAS swiftly suspended Niger from the regional bloc and closed borders, demanding Bazoum's release and reinstatement.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration faced pressure to halt electricity exports to Niger as part of sanctions against the military regime. Despite these tensions, Nigeria has continued to finance the Kano-Maradi standard gauge railway project aimed at enhancing economic integration between the two nations.

The situation remains complicated as Tchiani's regime consolidates power, and Nigeria's relationship with France adds further strain. The continued detention of Bazoum's wife without trial has drawn international condemnation, highlighting the ongoing constitutional crisis in Niger.
