NIBSS Launches National Payment Stack Using Open-Source Technology

Nigeria's central payment infrastructure operator has launched the National Payment Stack, a cutting-edge platform for instant payments that strengthens the country's digital payment ecosystem. Transactility, based in the United States, supplied the technology foundation for this system.

Open-source components, particularly the jPTS switching platform, form the backbone of this deployment. ISO 20022 serves as the messaging standard powering the NPS.

This international standard governs how financial transaction data gets structured and transmitted. By implementing it, the platform enhances information flow and processing capabilities across Nigeria's banking sector.

Through a modular architecture approach, NIBSS maintained ownership of both design and development efforts, blending internally created solutions with carefully selected open and enterprise-grade technologies. Leveraging open-source technology afforded NIBSS significant advantages regarding system maintenance and scalability.

As payment volumes grow and operational demands intensify, the operator can readily adapt the infrastructure. The ability to access, review, and modify source code substantially reduces reliance on external vendors offering closed proprietary solutions. jPOS, the underlying framework of Transactility's jPTS switch, already handles billions of transactions daily worldwide.

The NPS architecture's modularity enables tailoring payment solutions to Nigeria's unique market conditions and operational requirements. After careful evaluation, NIBSS concluded that Transactility's open-source stack optimally balanced adherence to global standards with local operational autonomy.
