NIDCOM Updates on Ekene Chukwuma's Detention in India

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) provided an update on Ekene Vitus Chukwuma, a Nigerian detained at Lampur Detention Camp in Delhi, India, for visa overstay. Chukwuma was arrested in December 2025 after remaining in India without valid immigration documentation.

He informed a Consular Officer of the Nigerian High Commission that he had sent his wife and three children back to Nigeria but opted to stay in India for business. His Nigerian passport expired in 2020, and he was issued an Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) to facilitate his return during an amnesty period, which he did not use.

NIDCOM stated that deportation matters are managed by India’s Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), and detainees must bear the cost of their return. The Nigerian High Commission is monitoring Chukwuma's situation and has requested a six-month amnesty for Nigerians in India illegally to return home without penalties, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
