Nigeria Warns Against Force in Niger Political Dispute

The Federal Government of Nigeria cautioned against the use of force to resolve political differences in Niger Republic after reports of an attempted coup. Early Saturday, gunfire and explosions were heard in Niamey, the capital, as suspected mutinous soldiers targeted Diori Hamani International Airport, which is approximately 10 kilometers from the presidential palace.

This incident marks the third attack on the airport this year. In response, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed concern over the political and security situation in Niger.

He stated that Nigeria is committed to peace, security, democracy, and development in Niger, emphasizing that stability in Niger positively impacts Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region. Adeniyi highlighted the importance of avoiding forceful resolutions to political disputes and urged Nigerien authorities to adopt an inclusive and participatory approach to restore stability and constitutional order.
