Nigeria Denies Endorsement of Niger Coup Attempt

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially rejected claims suggesting its endorsement of the recent failed coup attempt in the Niger Republic. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb Sola Enikanolaye, issued a statement on Thursday, describing the circulating claims as baseless and irresponsible.

He emphasized Nigeria's commitment to peace, democracy, and constitutional order, stating that the country would never support any form of illegality or unconstitutional change of government. Enikanolaye referenced an official press statement dated August 30, 2026, which expressed Nigeria's concern over the situation in Niger and advocated for a peaceful return to stability.

He reiterated Nigeria's dedication to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the African Union's stance against unconstitutional changes of government. The minister urged the public to disregard misleading narratives circulating online and reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to working with ECOWAS, the AU, and the international community to promote peace and stability in the region.
