Nigeria Rejects Claims of Supporting Niger Coup Attempt

The Federal Government of Nigeria has firmly stated that it will never support military coups or any unconstitutional changes of government, following allegations that Nigeria backed a failed coup attempt in the Niger Republic. Sola Enikanolaiye, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, issued this statement on Thursday, asserting that the claims circulating on social media are baseless and misleading.

Enikanolaiye emphasized Nigeria's commitment to democracy, constitutional rule, and political stability in West Africa, reiterating that the country will not endorse any illegal government removals. He also dismissed assertions that Nigeria, through its membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), supported the military takeover in Niger.

The minister referenced a previous statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 30, 2026, expressing Nigeria's concern for the situation in Niger and its desire for a peaceful return to stability and constitutional order. Enikanolaiye urged Nigerians to disregard misleading narratives online that aim to confuse and damage Nigeria's reputation.
